How to open a savings account at the post office, or an India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) account that the postman can open at your home: the papers, the money and the limits.
For whom: People in Andhra Pradesh who want an account at the post office: adults alone or two or three together, parents or guardians opening one for a child, and people who need an account to receive scheme money.
Published on 30-10-2026. Not every fact has been checked against its official source yet: confirm at the office.
Answer a few questions to see which steps apply to you. The whole guide is below.

Documents you need

•
Account opening form (Form-1), with the pay-in slip (SB 103)
original
If you don't have it:
Ask for them at the post office counter.
•
A recent passport size photograph
original
One of each person opening the account; it is pasted on the form.
📷 What the photo must look like
• It must be a recent photograph.
Not confirmed: The rules say only "a recent passport size photograph"; they give no measurements, background or colour. Ask the post office what kind of photo it wants, and how many.
•
Aadhaar number
copy
If you do not have Aadhaar yet, proof that you applied for enrolment will do; give the Aadhaar number within six months of opening, or the account stops working until you do.
If you don't have it:
→ Getting a new Aadhaar
Not confirmed: For a child's account the rules do not say clearly whether the child's Aadhaar, the guardian's, or both are needed. Ask at the post office.
•
PAN card, or Form 60
copy
Without PAN, give Form 60 of the Income Tax Rules. If later the balance ever goes over ₹50,000, or the deposits in a financial year add up to more than ₹1 lakh, or withdrawals and transfers in a month add up to more than ₹10,000, give your PAN within two months; otherwise the account stops working until you do.
If you don't have it:
→ New PAN card
•
Proof of the child's date of birth
copy
A certificate showing the date of birth. The form asks for its number, date of issue and issuing authority.
•
Welfare scheme card or letter
original and a copy
Issued by a State or Central government department, showing your name (for a child's account, the child's) under any welfare scheme. The postmaster compares the copy with the original and signs it; give a copy of your Aadhaar and the KYC form with it.
•
Aadhaar
original
If you don't have it:
→ Getting a new Aadhaar
•
PAN card
original
If you don't have it:
→ New PAN card
•
Post office savings account passbook (only to link that account)

You cannot get this

Only Indian citizens resident in India can open a post office savings account. Under RBI rules, payments banks such as India Post Payments Bank must not accept deposits from NRIs. So neither account can be newly opened while you live abroad.
Not confirmed: For someone who opened an account while living in India and later became an NRI, the rules say the account may continue until maturity on a non-repatriation basis; ask the post office where the account is how this applies to a savings account, which has no maturity.

You cannot get this

A post office savings account is only for Indian citizens. OCI cardholders and foreign nationals are not Indian citizens, so they cannot open one; if an account holder stops being an Indian citizen, the account is closed.
Not confirmed: The IPPB pages and RBI rules we read do not say whether OCI cardholders or foreign nationals can open an India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) account. Ask IPPB on 155299.
