Link PAN with Aadhaar

Link PAN with Aadhaar
Your PAN is linked with your Aadhaar, and an inoperative PAN works again.
For whom: People who have a PAN: if you do not know whether it is linked, if your PAN is "inoperative", or if the link fails because the name or date of birth do not match.
Published on 30-10-2026. Not every fact has been checked against its official source yet: confirm at the office.

For everyone

1.
First see whether you must link. Everyone who had a PAN on 1 July 2017 and can get Aadhaar must link the PAN with Aadhaar. Those who got their PAN with an Aadhaar Enrolment ID must link it with their actual Aadhaar number. A new PAN is linked with Aadhaar when it is applied for.
✋ You do this yourself
Not confirmed: These rules are as the portal states them, from section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and Notification No. 37/2017. We found no official page restating them under the Income-tax Act, 2025 (in force from 1 April 2026); the portal's FAQs still say the same. For a PAN got with an Enrolment ID the deadline was 31 December 2025; if not linked, the PAN is inoperative from 1 January 2026.
2.
See whether any of these applies to you: aged 80 or more; a non-resident under the Income-tax Act; not an Indian citizen; living in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir or Meghalaya. For them linking is not required, and the PAN does not become inoperative for not linking. If they choose to link anyway, they pay a fee and follow the same steps below.

3.
On the e-Filing portal, open "Link Aadhaar Status", enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click "View Link Aadhaar Status". If they are already linked, you need not do anything more.

Are your name and date of birth the same in PAN and in Aadhaar? No, they differ · Which one has the mistake? Aadhaar
4.
Before linking, have your name or date of birth corrected in Aadhaar (see the "Update Aadhaar details" guide). Do the steps below only after the Aadhaar update is done.

5.
If PAN has the mistake, apply for a correction on a PAN agency's website: "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data" on Protean, or "Change/Correction in PAN Card" on UTIITSL (pan.utiitsl.com). Give the name and date of birth as they are in Aadhaar; the card carries the name as in Aadhaar. Do the steps below only after the PAN details have changed.

Not confirmed: The 30 days is from the PIB release of 28 March 2023; the current portal FAQ gives no number of days.

If something goes wrong

If it is rejected
If the link fails because the name, date of birth or mobile number differ, correct either PAN or Aadhaar so that both match. If it still fails, you can have it linked with biometric Aadhaar authentication at a Protean or UTIITSL PAN centre: take your PAN, Aadhaar and the copy of the challan for the ₹1,000 fee. The centre charges separately for the biometric service.

Also
If it says your PAN is linked with another Aadhaar, or your Aadhaar with another PAN, you must ask your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer to delink it. Find the officer's details with "Know Your AO" on the portal.

Also
If your PAN is "inoperative": no tax refund due to you is paid, no interest is paid on the refund for that period, and TDS and TCS are taken at a higher rate. This lasts until the PAN works again. It does not apply to exempt people. To make it work again, pay the ₹1,000 fee and link it with Aadhaar (the steps above).

If you are asked for more money
You can link it yourself on the portal, even without logging in. The fee is paid by challan straight to the Income Tax Department through e-Pay Tax, and the portal fills in the amount. If anyone asks for more to link it for you, do not pay.
