Driving licence
First a learner's licence, then a driving test after 30 days. If you pass, the driving licence card comes to your home by post.
For whom: Anyone living in Telangana getting a first licence to drive a two-wheeler or a car.
Published on 30-10-2026. Not every fact has been checked against its official source yet: confirm at the office.

Only if

How old are you? 16 or 17 · Do you already have a learner's licence? No
1.
At 16 or 17 you can apply only for a motor cycle without gear (engine up to 50cc). A parent or guardian also signs the application.
✋ You do this yourself
📎 Parent's or guardian's consent

Only if

Which vehicle is the licence for? Both
2.
If you want both, choose both classes, two-wheeler and car, when you apply. The fees are charged for each class, and at the driving test you drive each vehicle.

Not confirmed: The Transport Department's older pages still point to slot booking on tgtransport.net; those booking pages now show "Service Available in Sarathi". NIC Telangana's note says Telangana moved to Sarathi in 2025. We could not open Sarathi's inner pages (which documents to upload).
4.
Pay the learner's licence fee online, then book a date and time for the test at an RTA office near you under "LL Test Slot Booking".

💰 Fee: By Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules: ₹150 learner's licence fee and ₹50 test fee for each class of vehicle (a two-wheeler and a car are two classes). The Transport Department adds a ₹100 service charge. The portal shows the total before you pay.
Not confirmed: The ₹100 service charge is from the Transport Department's FAQ and its 2017 charter, both written before Sarathi. A note under the Rule 32 table says the driving test fee (₹300) is paid together with the learner's licence fees; the FAQ lists it at the driving licence stage. At each stage pay what the portal asks.
5.
On the booked day, go to the RTA office with your original documents. After your photo, signature and thumb impression are taken, you take a computer test: about 20 questions in 10 minutes, at least 12 right to pass. It is in Telugu, Hindi or English.

💰 Fee: By Rule 32: ₹300 driving test fee for each class of vehicle, ₹200 for issuing the licence, and ₹200 more for the smart card. The Transport Department's FAQ lists a ₹300 service charge for a two-wheeler or car licence, and its 2017 charter ₹35 for postage. The portal shows the total.
Not confirmed: The service charge and postage are from Transport Department pages written before Sarathi. We found no official order making an online road safety course compulsory before the driving test; Sarathi has a "Road Safety Content" menu. If the portal asks for the course when you book, complete it, or ask at the RTA office.
9.
On the booked day, go to the driving test track with a vehicle of the class you applied for, its RC, insurance and PUC, and your learner's licence. You drive in front of the Motor Vehicle Inspector.

Not confirmed: The Transport Department's FAQ says you can choose any track in Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts, and that in other districts only the track where the learner's licence was issued is shown. It was written before Sarathi.
10.
If you pass, the driving licence card comes to your address by Speed Post. You can follow it on Sarathi under "Track Dispatch Article Status". A two-wheeler or car licence is valid, if you are under 30, for 20 years or until you turn 40, whichever comes first; if you are 30 to 50, for 10 years.

Not confirmed: Retest fees: the Rule 32 table lists ₹50 (learner's) and ₹300 (driving, each class); the Transport Department's FAQ says ₹150 + ₹100 for a learner's retest. These rules are from the FAQ written before Sarathi; pay the amount the portal shows.
If it is late
If the card has not come, first check "Track Dispatch Article Status" on Sarathi. Then complain to the Transport Department's call centre: 1100 from BSNL, 1800 425 1110 from other networks. The department's charter says complaints are settled within 7 days; if not, they go to the next officer, and to the Transport Commissioner after 15 days.

Not confirmed: The call centre numbers are from the 2017 charter; the same numbers are on the department's grievance site (tgtransport.net/grievance). The grievance website address in the charter no longer works.
If you are asked for more money
The Transport Department has no agents or touts. Slot booking is free, and nobody can get you a slot out of turn. Do not pay anyone for a slot. Pay only the fees the portal shows, online, and keep a receipt for every payment. If anyone asks for money, complain to the call centre (1100, or 1800 425 1110).
