Mahalakshmi: the ₹500 gas cylinder and free bus travel for women
How to travel free on TGSRTC buses, and how to get the ₹500 gas cylinder, under the Mahalakshmi scheme.
For whom: Bus travel: girls, women and transgender persons domiciled in Telangana. Gas cylinder: white ration card holders with a gas connection in their own name. The ₹2,500 a month for women is not in this guide: we found no government order for it.
Published on 30-10-2026. Not every fact has been checked against its official source yet: confirm at the office.
Answer a few questions to see which steps apply to you. The whole guide is below.

Documents you need

•
Aadhaar card
original
If you don't have it:
→ Getting a new Aadhaar
Not confirmed: For the bus: an official district page (Wanaparthy) says an Aadhaar card is enough. We found no TGSRTC rule on which other identity cards count, or whether a photocopy or a copy on your phone will do; ask the TGSRTC call centre.
•
White ration card (food security card)
original
If you don't have it:
→ Food security (ration) card
•
Gas connection receipt or book (in your name)
original
If you don't have it:
Your gas agency issues it.
•
Bank account details (account number and IFSC)
copy
The first page of your bank passbook
Not confirmed: The order says the subsidy goes to a bank account (DBT), but not which account, or whether it must be linked to Aadhaar. Only the district page asks for account details.

Steps

Only if
Is the traveller a girl, a woman or a transgender person domiciled in Telangana? Yes
1.
Board a TGSRTC Palle Velugu or Express bus. You can travel free from anywhere to anywhere within Telangana.
✋ You do this yourself
Not confirmed: The order names only Palle Velugu and Express buses. We saw no official document saying whether Hyderabad city buses (City Ordinary, Metro Express) are included, or which buses, such as AC buses, are not. Ask the conductor or the TGSRTC call centre (040-69440000, 040-23450033).
2.
Show the conductor your Aadhaar card and take the ticket you are given. You pay no fare.

💰 Fee: Free · Free
Not confirmed: The order also asked TGSRTC to bring in a "Maha Lakshmi smart card". We found no official notice of how or where to get one.
3.
On a bus going to another state, travel is free only up to the Telangana border. Buy a ticket for the distance beyond it.
✋ You do this yourself
Only if
Did you apply for the gas cylinder in Praja Palana (28 December 2023 to 6 January 2024)? No
4.
Go to the Praja Palana counter at your mandal's MPDO or Tahsildar office and ask to be registered for the Mahalakshmi gas cylinder.
🏛️ MPDO or Tahsildar office (Praja Palana counter)
📎 White ration card (food security card), Aadhaar card, Gas connection receipt or book (in your name), Bank account details (account number and IFSC)
Not confirmed: The 2024 order makes a Praja Palana application one of the conditions, and tells District Collectors to open counters for registration, checking and updating. In February 2024 the Chief Minister asked for counters at MPDO and Tahsildar offices for people who had not applied in Praja Palana. We could not confirm that these counters take new names now, which form they use, or where the counter is in a town: the Praja Palana and Civil Supplies websites did not open on 30 October 2026. Ask at the office first.
Only if
Does your family have a white ration card (food security card)? And do you have a domestic gas (LPG) connection in your own name that is in use? Yes, both
5.
Book a refill with your gas agency as usual.
🏛️ Your gas agency
6.
Pay the price the agency asks when the cylinder comes. Under the order, the oil company then sends the subsidy straight to your bank account (DBT), so the cylinder costs you ₹500.
✋ You do this yourself
💰 Fee: ₹500 · You pay the agency's price first; the subsidy reaches your bank account later.
Not confirmed: The order calls this way of paying a trial, and asks the Civil Supplies and Finance departments to find a way to hand over the cylinder for ₹500 only. We found no later order on the government orders site; ask your gas agency how it works now.
7.
Check in your passbook or bank messages that the subsidy has come. Subsidised cylinders are limited: as many as your household used in a year, on average, over the last three years.
