Free hospital treatment: Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat

Free hospital treatment: Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat
How to check whether your family is covered for free hospital treatment under Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat, how to get cashless treatment at a network hospital, and where to complain if you are asked to pay.
For whom: Families in Telangana with a food security (ration) card, families on the Ayushman Bharat list, people aged 70 or more, and family members helping them.
Published on 30-10-2026. Not every fact has been checked against its official source yet: confirm at the office.

For everyone

1.
In Telangana, Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) run together as one scheme ("AB PM-JAY – Rajiv Aarogyasri") through the Rajiv Aarogyasri Health Care Trust. Since a December 2023 order, Rajiv Aarogyasri covers treatment up to ₹10 lakh per family a year. Across India, PM-JAY covers ₹5 lakh per family a year.
✋ You do this yourself

Only if

Does your family have a Telangana food security (ration) card? Yes
2.
Check that your family is in Aarogyasri: on the Trust website open "Card Search", choose "FSC Card" as the card type, and search with your card number and district. People named and photographed on a food security card are covered; there is no separate enrolment.

3.
Check whether your family is on the Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) list: search on the "Am I Eligible" website, or call the national toll-free helpline 14555 (or 1800-111-565). If you are on the list, you are covered, with no payment or registration needed.

Not confirmed: The "Am I Eligible" website and pmjay.gov.in did not open while we wrote this, and the helpline numbers are from PM-JAY documents of 2019. When the two schemes were joined in 2021, the cover was set at ₹5 lakh per family a year. The Trust's pages give the ₹10 lakh (since December 2023) for families with a food security card; we found nothing official on whether a PM-JAY family without that card gets ₹10 lakh or ₹5 lakh. Ask the Aarogyamitra or call 104.

Only if

Is the person who needs treatment 70 or older? Yes, 70 or older
4.
Everyone aged 70 or more is covered by the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme, whatever their income. Enrol on beneficiary.nha.gov.in, or have the enrolment completed at the hospital when you go; the hospital then registers you in Aarogyasri with the family ID from that enrolment. Aadhaar is used for the age. NHA's "Ayushman App" (Android) also lets you verify yourself and make an Ayushman card.

First go to a nearby government hospital, primary health centre (PHC) or a health camp run by a network hospital, with your card and reports. The Aarogyamitra there helps with the check-up and, if needed, the referral to a network hospital.

At the network hospital, go to the Aarogyasri counter near reception. The Aarogyamitra (in a uniform with the Aarogyasri logo) checks your card, takes your photo and registers you. The hospital gets prior approval for the treatment online.

If something goes wrong

If you are asked for more money
If the hospital asks you to pay for treatment the scheme covers, first tell the Aarogyamitra there. Then call 104 to complain, or file a complaint under "Grievance/Complaint" on the Trust website. For treatment on an Ayushman Bharat card, there is also the PM-JAY grievance portal and the national helpline 14555 (or 1800-111-565).

If it is rejected
If you are told your card was not found or the treatment was not approved, ask the Aarogyamitra and the hospital's Aarogyasri medical coordinator (MEDCO) why. Then call 104, or go to the Trust's District Coordinator or the District Collector.

Ask the Aarogyamitra or call 104.
If it is late
If the approval is slow, ask the Aarogyamitra and the MEDCO. In emergencies the hospital can also get approval by phone. If it is still slow, call 104.

Also
If your family has no food security card, is not on the Ayushman Bharat list and the patient is under 70, these schemes do not cover you. Government hospitals give free treatment for illnesses the scheme does not cover.
